Spirit AeroSystems announced the establishment of a new R&D center at its production site in Prestwick, Scotland. Innovation will focus on composite injection processes, part processing, assembly automation, rapid prototyping and virtual/augmented reality.

“The new facility will further advance our industry-leading aerospace technology and innovation,” said Smith Gentile, CEO and CEO of Spirit. "The next generation of aircraft does not exist, and this is what we are concerned about. Our engineers are creating the future of flight."
The new center will include a training area and will increase the company's R&D range from approximately 8,000 square feet to 70,000 square feet. Construction will begin later this year and the company is expected to open in 2019.
“This remarkable innovation center will feature the professional design and research work we are familiar with,” said John Pilla, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Spirit. “This is another example of Spirit's unique capabilities that make us the partner of choice for global aerospace companies.”
Spirit AeroSystems is an aerospace fabric manufacturer that provides design and build capabilities for commercial and defense customers. The Prestwick plant produces metal and composite wing components such as the leading and trailing edges of the Airbus A320 series and spoilers.
