Since 1938, the pony truss has crossed the residents and tourists on the Weihe River. A 60 lb. steel grid/concrete deck. The load generated per square foot is too heavy for the aging structure. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) needed a lightweight option to balance high performance and maintain the span of historical features. MassDOT selects FiberSPAN and another state project based on its tracking history. In 2013, Composite Advantage provided the world's largest fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite deck to Haverhill's Rocks Village vehicle bridge. Built in 1883, the six-span steel truss structure is the oldest movable bridge in the state. Its oscillating span allows vessels and barges to pass through, and repairs add 18,800 square feet of new driving surface to the bridge. Inspections since the deck installation have found that the panel-to-panel joints, jumper joints and worn surfaces are in new condition.


The Rugg Bridge has a total length of 123 feet and the longitudinal steel stringers are 6 feet 2 inches apart. The FiberSPAN deck panel is 25 feet long, 11 inches wide, 10 feet long and 7 7/8 inches thick. The fiberglass deck and its wear surface are black Mattron (alumina) and weigh only 23 pounds. Per square foot. Bolt shear studs connect the deck panels to the steel rafters and floor beams. Specifications include AASHTO HS-20 vehicle plus impact load, 0.9 environmental endurance factor, L / 500 maximum deflection requirement, 10% static strain for bending strain/shear strain maximum, and working load with bending/shear strain Plus static load up to 20%. The short span is open before the Memorial Day weekend.
