Members include trade associations throughout the supply chain of the UK Composites community, which has added 50 companies over the past 12 months. These include SMEs and original equipment manufacturers, from manufacturers, materials/equipment suppliers, designers, consultants, engineers, end users to academia and more.

British Composites has grown steadily by 20% annually since 2013, and in the past two months, companies have joined Penso, AM Structures, technical composite systems, advanced aerospace assembly, DK fiberglass engineering, BAMD, MODE, Dymag And Talga technology.

“British Composites has achieved this growth as the industry believes that we have implemented key initiatives to support its long-term business objectives,” said Sue Halliwell, operations manager at Composites UK.

“We recently announced that UK composites have become the tenth national association to join the European Composites Industry Association (EUCIA), in part to ensure that our members have a strong influence on legislative decisions, which will affect their take off in the UK The situation in Europe. This is after consulting our members and putting their ideas into practice."

Looking ahead, the association said that this year's work is busy, and a number of events, such as the display of the renewable energy sector, the regional activities in the southwest, Northern Ireland and Yorkshire, and the 2018 industry awards dinner on October 31 have exceeded 150 seats.

The construction industry team will release guidance documents for the FRP bridge designers, which will enable materials that are specified for bridges to better understand composite materials, standards and more.

Recently, British Composites launched a new three-year health and safety action plan that fulfilled HSE's key objectives in its 2018-21 SiMPLC strategy. The association also works closely with BSI to ensure appropriate composite representation in the UK Standards Committee.

The sustainability team launched in October 2017 is making progress in several areas. A study with Scott Bader to evaluate the disposal plan for composite waste is nearing completion and has applied for funding to implement its recommendations. In collaboration with the National Composites Center, the group is working with global partners in Europe, the US and other regions to develop life cycle assessment capabilities, data and methods.

In addition, the British Composites Association supports the Composite Leadership Forum, which provides the UK's composites strategy launched in 2016. The conference forum program at the Advanced Engineering Show later this year will showcase key findings, projects and initiatives.
