A research team led by Abina Oluohua, a principal researcher at the Institute of Physics and Technology of the University of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, developed a fine-grain composite based on Y2.5Nd0.5A5O12 garnet, which was also added. High thermal conductivity metals (nickel, molybdenum, tungsten) and silicon carbide with low neutron capture cross sections.

The research team also developed a new chemical metallurgy method for depositing thin layers of metal on the surface of submicron synthetic garnet particles, while sintering powder materials using high-speed discharge plasma sintering technology and producing ceramic composites.

Professor Orowa’s research team obtained a theoretical density of “garnet-metal” and “garnet-silicon carbide” ceramic composites with a relatively high density (“garnet-metal” with a theoretical density of 92%–99%, The theoretical density of the "garnet-silicon carbide" composite is 98% - 99%).

Professor Oluohua said that the high hardness, high fracture toughness and high thermal physical properties of the composite, especially in the range of the new fast reactor temperature, will reduce the possibility of ceramic breakage during reactor operation. strength.
