Airbus suppliers use sheet molding to invest in highly automated production lines for new airspace cabin entry areas
The FACC (Ried im Innkreis, Austria) has been providing overhead storage boxes and ceilings for the A320 aircraft model since 1990. It is now announcing a new major contract with Airbus (Toulouse, France) to expand its strategic partnership for aircraft interiors. In addition to the Airspace XL box (overhead storage), the FACC will now also provide an entry area for the A320 family of aircraft. This includes the entire lining of the entrance area and the door area of the ceiling panel including the front, middle and rear of the aircraft.
The contract is worth more than 230 million euros and is based on FACC's multi-million euro investment in new sheet molding compound (SMC) technology and highly automated production lines. It will create 100 new jobs. SMC technology can significantly reduce costs compared to similar products made using traditional processes. FACC CEO Robert Machtlinger concluded: "Investing in the SMC line will be worthwhile, and we will use this process to provide other applications and components."
FACC develops and manufactures ready-to-install assembly modules with various system components such as lighting systems, audio systems or oxygen connections. The FACC also provides approved verification.
For decades, European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has relied on FACC technology in its model.
