EU ELV Regulation Final Approved: LFT Thermoplastics Gain Strategic Advantage Over Thermosets
The European Parliament has given its final approval to the new End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) Regulation, replacing the existing directive and expanding its scope to motorcycles, trucks, and heavy vehicles. The regulation will enter into force after formal Council endorsement and become applicable 24 months later.
Key Mandates for Automotive Supply Chains
🔹 Recycled content targets – Plastics in each new vehicle type must contain at least 15% recycled material within 6 years and 25% within 10 years.
🔹 Closed-loop requirement – A minimum of 20% of that recycled content must originate from end-of-life vehicles or used parts – i.e., "closed-loop" recycling.
🔹 Design for dismantling – New vehicles must be designed to enable easy removal of components to facilitate repair, reuse, and recycling.
🔹 Extended producer responsibility – Manufacturers must cover the costs of collection and treatment of ELVs across the EU, starting 3 years after the regulation applies.

Why This Rewrites the Rules for Composites
The closed-loop mandate is the real game-changer. It demands that a portion of recycled plastics come specifically from end-of-life vehicles – not just industrial scrap or post-consumer waste.
This poses a fundamental hurdle for thermoset composites. Once cured, thermosets form irreversible cross-linked networks – they cannot be remelted or reprocessed. Their end‑of‑life fate is limited to downcycling, incineration, or landfill.
By contrast, thermoplastic LFT (Long Fiber Thermoplastic) materials have linear polymer chains that can be repeatedly softened and reshaped. Components can be shredded, reprocessed, and returned to production – making LFT naturally aligned with the ELV closed-loop requirement.
LFT-G® – Built for Circularity
LFT-G® materials are engineered from the ground up for end‑of‑life recyclability. Our LFT-G® PA, PP, PPS, and Elastomer series use high‑purity virgin polymers – not just for mechanical performance, but to ensure true closed‑loop recyclability without quality degradation.
As the European automotive industry accelerates the expansion of its recycling infrastructure to meet new targets, LFT-G® stands ready to help suppliers achieve ELV compliance without compromising strength, weight, or durability.
The message is clear: The era of "design for disposal" is over. Design for circularity is now the law – and thermoplastic LFT is leading the way.
