Long fiber reinforced thermoplastics (LFT) refers to glass fiber reinforced colloidal materials obtained from long, continuous glass fibers, which are fully wetted by a special process and then cut into specific sizes. Usually the length of the glass is 10 to 25 mm. Long glass fiber reinforced PP materials are inexpensive and have the same excellent performance as reinforced engineering plastics, thus showing a cost-effective advantage and good prospects.
The traditional glass fiber reinforced technology is to melt and mix the glass fiber tow directly in the extruder with the resin base. Under the action of frictional shearing of the screw and the barrel, the glass fiber tow is shredded to obtain a short glass fiber reinforced material. Most of the glass fibers in the final product have a length that is less than the critical length of the reinforcement, and the glass fiber reinforcement ability is not fully utilized.
Unlike the preparation of short fiber reinforced materials, long glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic materials are made of long, continuous glass fibers, which are fully wetted by a special process and then cut into glass reinforced rubber particles of a specific size. When the length of the glass fiber exceeds the critical length Lc, the LFT material exhibits performance advantages such as high strength and good heat resistance, and can replace the short fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite material.
