Japan's Asahi Glass (AGC) has developed a fluororesin-based modification process for the expansion of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTPs) in the automotive and other fields to improve the impact strength of carbon fiber reinforced polyamide (PA) thermoplastic composites. In particular, this technology makes it easier to soak thermoplastics in carbon fiber and ensure the mechanical strength of the final product.
It has been reported that the use of AGC fluoropolymers to improve PA 6 improves impact resistance by 30% over conventional CFRTP. It also successfully reduced water absorption by 30%. Water absorption is the cause of thermal decomposition of PA 6 . This achievement not only reduces product defects that occur under high temperature molding, but also increases production.
AGC plans to help expand the use of CFRTP by providing new technologies to a variety of manufacturers in the transportation equipment sector. According to reports, CFRTP reinforcement materials can be used in many fields, such as automotive, aircraft and sporting goods parts. Among these components, lightweight materials are ideal. In addition to CFRTP, this technology can also be used to improve the performance of engineering plastics at high loads and temperatures.
According to Fuji Keizai, the global market value of CFRTP will increase 60 times by 2030.
