Stora Enso launches biocomposites as a renewable alternative to plastics
DuraSense can replace most fossil plastics with renewable fibers such as wood. Following the announcement of an investment of 12 million euros in 2017, the production of biocomposites began in 2018 at the Hylte plant in Stora Enso, Sweden. At full production, the plant has an annual capacity of 15,000 tons and is the largest composite of wood fiber production capacity in Europe.
“Reducing the amount of plastic and replacing it with renewable and traceable materials is a gradual process. With DuraSense, we can provide customers with wood fiber-based alternatives to increase sustainability and significantly reduce carbon footprint based on the product. - Up to 80%," said Jari Suominen, head of Stora Enso Wood Products. .
The DuraSense product line is suitable for a wide range of applications from consumer products to industrial applications. Typical applications include, for example, furniture, trays, hand tools, automotive parts, beauty and lifestyle products, toys and items such as kitchen utensils and caps, among other uses.
DuraSense Granules are a combination of natural wood fibers, polymers and additives that provide plastics for plasticity and wood sustainability and processability. With DuraSense, fibers can also be combined with recycled or bio-based polymers to further enhance environmental value. For example, DuraSense Eco100 is one of the product grades based on wood fiber and biopolymer and is a cost-competitive alternative to fossil plastics.
