New Composite Sponges Can Be Used To Deal With Oil Spills At Sea

According to the Science and Technology Daily News, the Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently learned that the researchers used the characteristics of nanocellulose and graphene to obtain a super-hydrophilic super-lipophilic sponge by dip coating. This "parental" sponge will have a good application prospect in the field of oil-water separation, especially in marine oil spills and various types of water resources contaminated by oil.


Liu Dongyan, associate researcher of the Research Institute of Polymer Composites of the Institute of Metals, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that this is the first super-parent polyurethane sponge material obtained directly by dip coating in the world.


It is reported that the new sponge can quickly adsorb water and oil, which provides a new idea for the preparation of porous elastic materials and composite materials with special wetting properties, and is expected to be applied in the field of catalyst carriers and smart polymer composite materials.
