Aimplas participates in the European project MAT4RAIL, “Designing the Future of Railways: Refractory Composites and Smart Modular Design”, aiming to reduce the weight of the railway by replacing the metal structural components with mitigating elements in the composite, as well as the intelligence of the space inside the cabin. The modular design increases the capacity of the vehicle and the comfort of the passengers.
As the project is implemented, it is expected to improve the cost, functionality and dependencies of the railway infrastructure, as well as timeliness, increase capacity and energy efficiency, and reduce life cycle costs. To this end, innovative materials and modular designs for railway rolling stock will be developed. By replacing the metal parts with certified mechanical and fire resistant fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), the weight of the train can be reduced. In addition, the modular design of railway interiors will also develop new developments that increase rail capacity and passenger comfort. The project began in October 2017 and has led to the development of a new epoxy resin formulation with improved flame retardant properties for fiber reinforced polymers. Mat4Rail will last for two years and will be coordinated by Cidetec (Spain). 15 other research institutions, SMEs, large companies and a university from seven European countries: InstitutoTecnológicoDeAragón and Aimplas-InstitutoTecnológicoDelPlástico (Spain); University of Bremen, IMA Materialforschung und Anwendungstechnik, Nvgtr Gbr and Grammer Railway Interior (Germany); Center for Science, Technology and Technology Textiles Belge and Coexpair (Belgium); Huntsman Advanced Materials (Switzerland), Escatec Switzerland and Accelepment (Switzerland); Swedish Rise Institute (Sweden); ASAS Aluminyum Sanayi Ve Ticaret Anonim Sirketi (Turkey); - Innovation and branding and Indat Modellbau Werkzeugbau Formenbau (Austria).
The MAT4RAIL project has received funding for the Shift2Rail Joint Commitment (S2R JU), one of the public-private partnerships in the EU Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program, with funding agreement number 777595.
