History & Custom Of Dragon Boat Festival
The festival has a rich history that dates back to over 2000 years ago. Legend has it that the festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a famous Chinese poet and politician who drowned himself in the Miluo River. The locals who admired him raced their boats to retrieve his body and threw rice dumplings into the river to keep the fish from eating his body. This is believed to have started the tradition of dragon boat racing and eating zongzi (rice dumplings) during the festival.
Today, dragon boat racing is an integral part of the festival celebrations. It involves teams of paddlers rowing long, narrow boats decorated with dragon heads and tails. The races are thrilling to watch and attract large crowds of spectators.
Apart from dragon boat racing, the festival is also celebrated by eating zongzi, which are glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. They are usually filled with different ingredients such as pork, beans, and egg yolk, and are steamed or boiled before being served. Zongzi are a delicious treat that symbolizes the spirit of the festival.
