China Nano Center And Airbus Jointly Research New Aviation Materials

On July 5th, the National Nanoscience Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Airbus (Beijing) Engineering Technology Center signed a cooperation agreement in Beijing, which will jointly tackle a series of problems such as carbon fiber composite materials through nano-modification to enhance resilience.


The invention and application of carbon nanocomposites brought about a revolution in the aviation industry. However, there are still some problems to be solved in the application of this composite material. In addition to poor toughness, the electrical conductivity is also reduced. According to Zhang Zhong, a researcher at the National Nanoscience Center, the life of an aircraft is about 30 years, and each aircraft has to withstand a large lightning. Compared with aluminum alloy materials, the conductivity of carbon fiber composites is reduced. Scientists are using nano-modification technology to increase the electrical conductivity of fiber materials to cope with the large lightning that may be encountered in the "lifetime" of aircraft.
