The new Polestar 1 car uses a large number of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers for a flexible driving experience.

The overall weight is reduced by 230 kg, and most of the main components are made of high-tech lightweight materials, which is the core factor for optimizing power operation.
The carbon fiber body of the Polestar 1 represents the first exploration of the carbon fiber structure by the Volvo Car Group – Polestar sets an example for the Volvo Group as a technological pioneer. The Polestar production center in Chengdu is currently under construction and will be fully operational in mid-2019. The production center is currently installing equipment designed to specifically handle the complex production processes of carbon fiber components.

Carbon fiber components have been widely used in automotive construction, including hoods, trunk lids, side panels, doors and the entire roof structure. The CFRP liner is bonded to the steel body base to enhance the traditional weak joint between the middle floor and the rear structure. In Polestar, this component is called “Dragonfly” and is made of CFRP. .
The dome-shaped part plays an important role in the reaction dynamics of the Polestar 1 car – it fundamentally improves a key point in the body structure – the torsional stiffness between the middle and rear structures of the floor.
Christian Samson, head of the Production Innovation Department, said, “When the enhanced structural frame is combined with the superb body and roof structure, a high-hardness, conductive chassis can be obtained for the driver to experience. Excellent driving characteristics. At the same time, it also has great design advantages." The carbon fiber roof structure is not only thinner and stronger than steel, but also allows the roof to be lower, resulting in a smooth and slender profile. The length and width of the roof glass panel are further extended to minimize internal body elemental interference for a true panoramic view.
Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, concluded: “Carbon fiber is critical to our Polestar 1 automotive design, engineering, and performance goals. The result combines aesthetics and technology. Its elegance and low profile are loyal to the original design. It looks and opens It’s the same, it’s wonderful!”
