Carbon fiber white body
Audi uses MSS as a tool to apply advanced carbon fiber composites to body-in-white (BIW) to reduce vehicle weight and improve vehicle performance. As the electrification of vehicles continues to advance, Audi has strengthened this vision. David Roquette, research and development specialist for carbon fiber composites (CFRP) technology at the Audi Lightweight Design Center, said that the first Audi R8 was made of aluminum, but Audi decided to use the carbon fiber composite developed by the MSS project in the second generation R8.
According to Roquette, the rear walls of the 2016 R8 Spyder and Coupé models are made of carbon fiber composite material, which greatly increases the torsional stress and the vehicle stiffness, and also reduces the weight of the vehicle.
Audi's design engineers combine unidirectional carbon fiber fabric reinforcements with a fast-cure epoxy resin system. Audi uses a foam sandwich that is designed to reduce the amount of carbon fiber in each structural member, B-pillar filler, and consolidate part while increasing its strength and stiffness. Audi hopes to inject epoxy into the carbon fiber-wrapped foam using a resin transfer molding (RTM) process. There is no need for machining and grinding when processing composite foam cores. In addition, according to Diebold, polymethacrylimide (PMI) materials have a homogenous cell structure that can withstand hydrostatic testing.
