In order to develop thermoplastic composite solutions for the aerospace industry, material suppliers Arkema SA and Hexcel Corp. have established strategic alliances.

The two companies said in a statement on March 26 that they will combine Hewlett Packard's carbon fiber technology with Arkema's polyetherketoneketone (PEKK).

As part of the project, the two companies will develop carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic tapes to produce lightweight components for next-generation aircraft.

In addition to lightweighting, the new composites will bring lower cost and faster production speeds to customers in aerospace, space and defense.

As part of the partnership, the two companies will also establish a joint R&D lab in France.

Arkema Chairman and CEO Thierry LeHénaff said the project will be implemented before the end of the year.

He added: "This plan will be implemented in the months before our new polyetherketoneone plant in Mobile, Alabama, is in production."
