What is the LFT long fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite?
Long fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (LFT) are fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites with a length of 6.3mm or more.
Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites (FRTP) is an important part of composite materials, which is reinforced with glass fiber (GF), carbon fiber (CF), aramid fiber (AF) and other fiber materials to various thermoplastic resins, called FRTP (Fiber Reinforced ThermoPlastics) abroad. Advanced fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites have high toughness, corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance, simple molding process, high material utilization (no waste), and no low-temperature storage, and have become a hot research topic in the materials industry.
According to the length of fiber retention (L) in the products, they can be divided into: short fiber reinforced thermoplastics (SFRT, L < 1.0 mm), long fiber reinforced thermoplastics (LFT or LFRT, generally L > 10 mm), and continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (CFRT, generally continuous fiber without cutting).
Compared with SFRT, LFT has low density, high specific strength, high specific modulus and high impact resistance, which makes it suitable for harsh application conditions, and this is one of the main reasons why LFT is preferred by downstream application industries.
Injection molding is the main production method of LFRT, which has a long history and is the most widely used. Its advantages are short molding cycle, minimum energy consumption, high product precision, complex and inserted products can be molded at one time, several products can be produced in one mold, and high production efficiency. The disadvantage is the high requirements to produce fiber-reinforced composites and to the quality of the mold. According to the current level of technological development, the maximum product of injection molding is 5kg and the minimum to 1g. This method is mainly used to produce various mechanical parts, construction products, home appliance shells, electrical materials, vehicle parts, etc.
