PPS filled long glass fiber (PPS-LGF) composite materials with high toughness, low warpage, fatigue resistance, good product appearance and other advantages, can be used for water heater impellers, pump housings, joints, valves, chemical pump impellers and housings, cooling water impellers and housings, home appliance parts and so on.

So what are the specific differences in the performance of short glass fiber (SGF) and long glass fiber (LGF) reinforced PPS composites?

Mechanical performance analysis

The reinforcing fibers added to the resin matrix can form a support skeleton, and when subjected to external forces, the reinforcing fibers can effectively assume the role of external loads; at the same time, they can absorb energy through fracture and deformation to improve the mechanical properties of the resin.

Therefore, the tensile and flexural strengths of PPS/LGF composites increased progressively by increasing the amount of glass fiber added. tensile and flexural properties of PPS/LGF composites were higher than those of PPS/SGF composites. tensile strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus of PPS/LGF composites increased by 11.0%, 18.9% and 11.3%, respectively, compared with those of PPS/SGF composites. The higher length retention of glass fibers in PPS/LGF composites resulted in higher load resistance and better mechanical properties under the same glass fiber content.

It can be seen that the impact performance of long glass fiber composites is 3-5 times more enhanced than that of short glass fiber composites. Moreover, with the increase of glass fiber content, the glass fiber in the composite can form an effective spatial network, and the strengthening effect is greater than that of the glass fiber tip, which can better transfer the applied load to the reinforcing fiber under the effect of applied load, and then improve the overall performance of the composite. The PPS/LGF system has a longer glass fiber length, a denser spatial network, a higher load-bearing capacity of the reinforced glass fiber, and a better impact strength.

Analysis of thermal properties of PPS/SGF and PPS/LGF composites

The results show that the introduction of glass fibers substantially improve the heat resistance of the composite, mainly due to the glass fibers to form a network skeleton of reinforcing fibers inside the composite, greatly improving its heat resistance, and PPS/LGF in the glass fiber size is longer, the advantage of heat resistance improvement is more obvious.

PPS/SGF and PPS/LGF composite cross-sectional analysis.

It can be seen that the glass fiber is better dispersed in the resin, and the reinforcing fiber network inside the composite is better constructed with the increase of glass fiber content; this is the main reason why the overall mechanical properties of the composite improve with the increase of glass fiber content. Comparing PPS/SGF and PPS/LGF composites, the retention rate of glass fiber in PPS/LGF composites is higher, which is the main reason for the superior mechanical properties of PPS/LGF composites.

In summary, PPS/LGF has 2-5 times better mechanical properties compared to PPS/SGF materials. Tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus of elasticity, notched impact strength and unnotched impact strength are all improved over PPS/SGF materials.
