LGF ABS Long Glass Fiber Composite

In the modern manufacturing industry that strives for extreme light weighting and high performance, engineers often face a difficult choice: should they opt for the high strength of metal materials or the low cost and design flexibility of plastics? The emergence of LGF ABS (long glass fiber reinforced ABS) is breaking this binary opposition. As a high-performance thermoplastic composite material, LGF ABS, with its unique fiber framework structure, is redefining the standards for structural component materials.

Introducing LGF ABS Material

LGF ABS compound resin is a high-performance modified engineering plastic. For easier understanding, it can be imagined as adding "micro steel bars" (long glass fibers) to the ordinary ABS plastic, thereby significantly enhancing the strength and durability of the material.

Let's break down its structure and components:

ABS (matrix): It is a copolymer of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. It is one of the most common plastics in our daily life (such as Lego blocks, some household appliance shells), with advantages including good surface gloss and easy processing. However, its own strength and heat resistance are limited.
LGF (reinforcing material): It refers to long glass fibers (Long Glass Fiber). Unlike the common "short glass fibers", the fiber length of LGF usually remains between 5 mm and 25 mm (and even longer).

Why can It Rival Metals?

Outstanding impact resistance and low-temperature toughness
This is the most significant improvement of LGF ABS compared to short glass fiber ABS. When subjected to high-speed impacts, the internal long fiber framework can absorb a large amount of energy through the fracture of fibers, the extraction of fibers, and the deformation of the framework.
Data comparison: Under the same glass fiber content, the notch impact strength of LGF ABS composite is typically several times or even more than that of SGF ABS. Especially in a low-temperature environment of -30℃, it still maintains good toughness and is not prone to brittle fracture.

Excellent dimensional stability and anti-rheological properties
Anti-rheology: Under continuous force (such as screw locking, long-term load-bearing), ordinary plastics will gradually deform and loosen. The fiber network of LGF ABS locks the movement of the high-molecular chains, making its anti-rheological performance close to that of metal.
Low warpage: The shrinkage rate of ABS is already low. After adding long glass fibers, the anisotropy is reduced, and the injection-molded parts have extremely high flatness, suitable for precise assembly.

Exceptional appearance and paintability
Compared to LGF-PP (polypropylene), LGF-ABS inherits the splendid surface gloss and exceptional paint adhesion of ABS resin. This means that the appearance parts made with it can be directly painted or electroplated without the need for complex primer treatment, resulting in lower production costs.

From Manufacturing to Shaping

Raw material preparation: Melt impregnation (Pultrusion)
LGF ABS cannot be simply mixed and extruded like ordinary modified plastics. It must adopt the melt impregnation process: Let the continuous glass fiber bundles pass through the molten ABS resin pool, allowing the resin to fully penetrate each fiber, then pull out, cool, and granulate. Only in this way can it be ensured that the fibers are parallelly arranged and of equal length in the particles.
Challenges in Injection Molding: Protecting Fibers
Buying LGF ABS pellets is just the first step. The key lies in the injection process. If the process is improper, the long fibers will be cut by the screw and become short fibers, resulting in a significant reduction in performance.
Screw Design: A low compression ratio and deep screw groove should be used to reduce shear force.
Mold Design: The runner and gate (Gate) should be designed to be wide to avoid fiber blockage or breakage.

Process parameters: A mild process with low rotational speed and low back pressure is usually adopted.

GF ABS: Application Scenario

Automotive Industry
As the requirements for battery life of new energy vehicles increase, "replacing steel with plastic" for weight reduction becomes inevitable. LGF ABS material can achieve more weight reduction compared to metals.
Typical components: dashboard frame, central control bracket, sunroof frame, battery bracket.
Special advantages: Compared to LGF-PP, LGF-ABS plastic pellet has a lower odor and is more suitable for automotive interior parts with high air quality requirements.

High-end household appliances and consumer electronics
Drones: Body structural components. They must be extremely lightweight and extremely shock-resistant (able to withstand impact), and also need to have sufficient rigidity to ensure stable flight. LGF ABS is an ideal choice.
Vacuum cleaners/Sweeping robots: Support frames for high-speed internal motors. Utilizing their fatigue resistance and stable size characteristics.

Sports and Leisure
Ski boots/ice skates shoe bases: In freezing environments, they need to withstand intense impacts. Ordinary plastics would crack due to the cold, but LGF ABS compound resin can handle it.

FAQ

Q: What are the core advantages of this product compared to LGF-PA?

A: Not affected by humidity. When nylon absorbs water, its rigidity will significantly decrease, while LGF ABS maintains extremely stable performance even in a humid environment and usually has a lower cost.

Q: Does LGF ABS need to be dried before production?

A: The ABS base material is hygroscopic. It is recommended to dry it; otherwise, the strength may decrease.

Q: Is it suitable for electroplating or painting?

A: It is highly suitable. It is one of the best surface-treated LGF materials, and can be directly painted without the need for a primer.
