Long fibre composites refer to a type of composite material that is made up of long fibres embedded in a matrix material. These fibres can be made from a variety of materials such as glass, carbon, or aramid and can be as long as several inches. The matrix material, on the other hand, is typically a polymer.
The long fibres in this type of composite material provide various mechanical properties, such as high strength and stiffness, that make it ideal for applications where structural integrity is crucial. These properties are achieved because the long fibres provide a continuous pathway for transmitting forces within the composite material, resulting in a more efficient load-bearing structure.

One of the key advantages of long fibre composites is their ability to be customized to specific applications. This is because the type and length of fibres used, as well as the choice of matrix material, can be tailored to achieve specific mechanical properties. For example, if a high strength-to-weight ratio is required, carbon fibres may be used. Alternatively, if toughness is a concern, aramid fibres may be chosen.
Long fibre composites also have a high resistance to fatigue and impact, meaning that they are less likely to fail under repeated loading or sudden impacts. This makes them ideal for use in applications such as aerospace, automotive, and sporting goods.
There are several manufacturing processes used to make long fibre composites, including injection moulding and pultrusion. In injection moulding, the composite material is injected into a mould cavity and allowed to solidify in the shape of the desired part. Pultrusion, on the other hand, involves pulling the composite material through a die to produce continuous lengths of the material.
