What Is Long Fiber Composites?

In the field of modern materials' science, long-fiber composite materials are gradually reshaping the material selection pattern in industrial manufacturing with their unique structural advantages and outstanding performance.

Long fiber composites refer to high-performance fiber-reinforced composites formed by combining fibers significantly longer than traditional short-fiber plastics (typically ≥5 mm, and even up to over 50 mm) with thermoplastic or thermosetting resin matrices. Compared with short-fiber reinforced materials (fiber length < 1 mm), long fibers form a more effective load transfer network in the matrix, endowing the material with higher strength, stiffness, impact resistance and fatigue resistance.

Essential Characteristics of Material Properties

The core value of long-fiber composite materials stems from their unique microstructure. When the fiber length exceeds the critical value (usually greater than 5 mm), the behavior of the fiber in the matrix will undergo a qualitative change. Unlike the simple "filling" effect of short fibers, long fibers are continuously and regularly arranged in the matrix. This structure will produce a significant effect when subjected to force. Specifically, when microcracks occur in the material, the long fibers spanning both sides of the crack can continue to bear the load and effectively prevent the crack from spreading. This mechanism enables the impact toughness of the material to reach several times that of short-fiber composites, and it performs particularly well in applications such as automotive bumpers that require the absorption of impact energy.

The differentiated advantages in market competition

In the face of competition from traditional materials, long-fiber composite materials have established insurmountable technical barriers in multiple dimensions. In terms of light weighting, its advantages are not only reflected in the static weight data, but also in the dynamic system-level benefits. New energy vehicle enterprises can use long carbon fiber composite materials to make battery pack casings, which can reduce weight and achieve the effect of lowering energy consumption. The system has been simplified while the battery life has been improved.

The cost-benefit ratio is another breakthrough point. Although the unit price of long-fiber composite materials may be higher than that of ordinary steel, their full life cycle cost has a significant advantage. Take the storage box of commercial vehicles as an example. The traditional steel box body needs to go through multiple processes such as stamping, welding and anti-rust treatment, while the box body formed by LGF-PP compound resin in one piece only requires three processes, reducing the investment in molds and lowering the production energy consumption. More importantly, compared with traditional steel boxes, composite material boxes require less anti-corrosion maintenance, and the overall total cost is lower.

In the dimension of sustainable development, long-fiber composite materials demonstrate stronger adaptability to The Times. In contrast, the non-recallability of thermosetting composites is even less suitable for the development of the modern social environment and the needs of policies.

The evolution of mainstream material systems

The long-fiber composite materials currently active in the market have developed into several distinctive categories. Glass fiber reinforced systems and carbon fiber reinforced systems are the two most common types. Both have irreplaceable positions in various key structural components due to their own advantages.

Looking to the future, long-fiber composite materials are developing towards functional integration and intelligent manufacturing. In the future, this material will play a significant role in more fields. With the continuous advancement of technology, its price will become increasingly affordable, and its application will become more and more widespread. It can be said that this material, which is both lightweight and sturdy, is leading a revolution in manufacturing.
