The automotive industry has used glass fiber reinforced direct long fiber thermoplastics (D-LFT) for the manufacture of a wide range of automotive components, including battery cases, load-bearing floors and spare tire compartments.
Long-fiber chopped thermoplastics are a typical composite of a thermoplastic polymer blended with a fiber-reinforced material having a nominal length of 6 mm.
In order to directly replace the glass fiber in D-LFT, in recent years, research has been conducted on high modulus and lightweight carbon fiber to improve component performance and reduce vehicle weight, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The study and its results were first proposed by George Husman at the SAMPE Tech Seattle conference on June 2-5, 2014. He was the chief technology officer of Zoltek and is now retired.
Subsequently, the study and its results were released during the SPE Automotive Composites Conference and Exhibition in the United States from September 9 to 11, 2014.
The results of this study by Husman are recorded in an article by Zytek's Kyle Rohan and TJ McDonough, as well as Vanja Ugresic, Eva Potyra and Frank Henning from the Fraunhofer Engineering Center for Composite Materials Research at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. For the paper "Direct mechanical study of long-fiber thermoplastic carbon fiber/PA6 and its related process parameters".
