Lose weight by 34%! Ford and Magna jointly develop a carbon fiber sub-frame to reduce tooling costs by about 30%-40%. Ford is evaluating a new carbon fiber sub-frame to see if it can be used in high-volume production vehicles. The new front sub-frame was jointly developed by Ford and the automotive industry's key supplier, Magna, and is currently being evaluated in the Ford Fusion development vehicle to test its service life. Magna's director of global lightweight composite products said: Last year, the company delivered a series of parts to Ford, and customers have carried out performance testing of parts and equipment. As of this year, we will know if the technology is ready for mass production. Magna's sub-frames not only achieve one-third of weight reduction, but also reduce the number of components required, reducing tooling costs by about 30% to 40%.
