Last week, one of the five Airbus BelugaXL aircraft successfully completed its first flight and landed in Toulouse-Blagnac, France, four hours and 11 minutes after the flight.

The BelugaXL is scheduled to be launched in November 2014 to address the transportation capacity requirements of the Airbus A350 XWB growth rate and single-channel production. Five aircraft will be built between 2019 and 2023 and will be gradually updated. The aircraft will operate at 11 destinations as a means of transporting large aircraft components by Airbus.
The 125-tonne aircraft can carry up to 53 tons in the cargo hold and fly over 2,500 miles. It is equipped with a narrow wing made of CFRP with an area of 361.6 square meters and a wingspan of 60.3 meters. A vertical fin with a bi-level stabilizer is located at the rear and is fitted with a pair of auxiliary vertical tail flat fins. The aircraft is expected to provide an additional 30% airlift capability for Airbus.
The Beluga XL is based on the A330-200 freighter and is powered by the Rolls Royce Trent 700 engine. The reduced cockpit, cargo structure and rear and rear are newly developed with the supplier to give the aircraft a unique look.
The first flight is now in the rearview mirror, and the BelugaXL will now undergo a 600-hour flight test in 10 months to obtain a model certification and put it into use in late 2019.
