Natural and synthetic composites
The composite material can be natural or synthetic. Wood is a natural composite composed of cellulose or wood fibers and substances called lignin. Fiber imparts strength to wood; lignin is a matrix or natural gum that binds and stabilizes them. Other composite materials are synthetic (artificial).
Plywood is an artificial composite that combines natural and synthetic materials. Thin wood veneers are bonded together with an adhesive to form a laminate wood panel that is stronger than natural wood.
Plastic composites?
Not all plastics are composite materials. In fact, most plastic toys, water bottles and other items used by familiar people are not composite materials. They are pure plastic. But many types of plastics can be reinforced to make them stronger. This combination of plastic and steel can produce some of the most powerful and versatile materials (for their weight) ever developed by technology.
Polymer resins such as polyesters, vinyl esters, epoxies or phenolics are sometimes referred to as plastics.
In any other name...
Many terms are used to define FRP composites. Modifiers have been used to identify specific fibers such as glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP), carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and aramid fiber reinforced polymer (AFRP). Another familiar term is fiber reinforced plastic. In addition, other abbreviations have been developed over the years, the use of which depends on geographic location or market use. For example, fiber reinforced composites (FRC), glass reinforced plastics (GRP), and polymer matrix composites (PMC) can be found in many references. Each of the above terms means the same thing: FRP composite.
