The Challenge

A Tier-1 automotive supplier was tasked with developing a next-generation seatbelt retractor system. The housing for the retractor mechanism is a safety-critical part. It must be incredibly strong and stiff to withstand the immense forces of the pretensioner during a crash, but it must also be exceptionally tough to absorb impact energy without shattering, especially in extreme cold-weather crash tests. The previous design used a costly and heavy die-cast zinc component.

The Solution: LFT-PA66-LGF40TA

Our toughened grade was engineered specifically for this type of challenge. Its 40% long fiber backbone provided the required high strength and stiffness, while the advanced toughening additives delivered superior notched Izod impact values, even at -40°C. This unique combination allowed the supplier to replace the heavy zinc housing with a lightweight, single-shot molded part, meeting all safety and performance targets.

Result: A 60% lighter housing that passed all crash and durability tests, simplifying assembly and significantly reducing overall system cost.
